What does Hispanic Heritage Month personally mean to you?
For me, it means celebrating the flavor and diversity that we inherently carry inside from our culture. There’s such a wide spectrum of varying traditions, food, complexions, and countries within the culture, and it's just so beautiful to celebrate it in its entirety.

Describe your journey in coming up with the idea to craft and donate face masks to essential workers nationwide.
It was purely instinctual. So many essential workers were in need of masks at the beginning of the pandemic and I had the skills to create masks, it wasn’t even a question. My background is in Fashion and I take pride in my sewing skills. I decided to post a video challenging anyone who can sew and has the resources to help, in what I thought could possibly be a life-saving endeavor. Next thing you know I was getting messages from essential workers from around the country and was on a non-stop sewing mission for months. So many other folks asked to purchase masks to support my mission. The longer this went on the more we saw that masks were here to stay so I tried to perfect my face mask, both through function and aesthetics that represented me as a designer- Graphic, bold, colorful. Now that PPE has been readily and consistently available to Essential workers, I’ve been able to focus more on my brand and products.

Tell us about your fashion design background and the story behind your Instagram handle name "LES2Paris"
I pretty much started off teaching myself how to sew when I was in Manhattan Center High school in Harlem. I wanted to express myself through fashion. My mom worked in sewing and knitting factories when she was young, so I guess the skills ran through my blood. I just dove right in and started by reconstructing tons of old clothes. After years of sewing and teaching myself how to drape I decided to take it to the next level and I moved to California to attend the Academy Of Art University’s Fashion/Knitwear program. Upon graduating I was 1 out of 2 rewarded with a French Exchange Scholarship to continue our studies at one of the top fashion schools in Paris, Studio Berçot. I came up with the slogan “From projects to Paris”, because I was so in awe that a kid from the projects could beat out all these rich kids with my drive and talent. It was one of the most incredible days of my life. I donned the name LES2Paris because I was so proud of growing up in LES, such a diverse neighborhood composed of predominately Latin, Black, and Asian. I was blessed to work and live in Paris for about 2 ½ years, so I wore the badge of honor representing the projects. The name signifies the journey and a reminder of what I’m capable of.

How has your Mexican heritage influenced or inspired your work?
My Mexican heritage has definitely inspired my work. I was lucky enough as a kid that every 2-3 years, my parents would save up and we’d visit my grandparents for a whole month in San Pablo Del Monte. I loved spending time there. The beauty that is Mexico is endless, from the food, the music, the architecture, the beautiful indigenous folks - it gives infinite inspiration that I am proud to grab from. I love mixing traditional Mexican textiles with modern design, as seen through some of my designs. I also love to incorporate bold colors which stems from beautiful colorful bold architecture.

Can you describe the type of community you've built so far and how you stay connected and involved with them?
I think I’ve built a pretty great community within my different networks from childhood/friends, to High School/College and international friends whilst abroad, to fashion-related folks and co-workers. I’m extremely grateful for all the incredible folks I’ve crossed paths with, so many different types of people from different backgrounds that I’ve learned so much from and have built lifelong connections with. I pride myself on being great at keeping in touch, normally. I travel often so I’m always visiting folks in other states or countries and catching up. Obviously, social media is a great tool for keeping up to date and in touch, so I definitely use that a lot to do so. During the last few months, I’ve broadened my community even further with folks who are heavily involved in giving back to communities in need and volunteering a lot of my time to their efforts. Incredibly inspired by these folks over at the Sixth St Community Center, AOC’s team, and LESMutual Aid here in NYC. I’ve always been outspoken when it comes to social and political awareness so it's great to be in the company of folks who put forth effort to create positive change in our communities. I think it's so important to give back to the communities that raised us, and can't forget where we come from.

What are some challenges that you face as a Hispanic-owned business?
One of the bigger challenges is one of the issues being heavily exposed right now, and it's the racism and inequality that permeates through what seems to be every industry. I’ve experienced a fair amount of it working in the fashion industry, and it can hold one back from being able to grow career-wise. There's always room to grow and improve, so I really hope this becomes a turning point for the world to really recognize some of its flaws and work towards improvement.

What is your ultimate goal as far as the type of impact you want to have on your community?
I just hope to inspire folks to show more love and spread more kindness, to be honest. I try to be positive and helpful and just hope folks walk away wanting to pay it forward. Especially in times like these.

Who are some of your Hispanic and Latinx influences, both in business and otherwise?
Growing up, the biggest influences were my parents, whose work ethic inspired me to study and work hard, they instilled in me to appreciate the value of every dollar. Some other influences are folks like Alejandra Occasio Cortez, who come from humble beginnings and have catapulted to fighting for significant changes for this country. I was put on to Lila Downs a while ago and I cannot get enough of her.
